Tommy Mitchell was born in 1983 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Self taught, Tommy studied tattoo artists for their attention to detail and execution as a kid in Virginia. After numerous local shows, Mitchell gradually made his way to Brooklyn, New York in 2013, showcasing around New York City in various pop ups and galleries. Tommy’s work expresses a heightened sense of realism, captured in his subjects, juxtaposed with religious imagery and retro fashion photography elements.
Working exclusively in portraiture, Tommy employs ballpoint pen to create realism, juxtaposed with Acrylic to compliment the detail in his subjects. The figures depict emotions of longing, solidarity and reflection. Mitchell attempts to make whole an idea that is fractured in it’s current one-dimensional form, referencing fashion photography, along with religious elements to achieve, expand, include and empower the representation of women of color.
