Tommy Mitchell is an emerging visual artist born in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Moving from Mississippi to Virginia as a child, Mitchell knew his passion was to become an Artist. Winning school art contests and being acknowledged as a young artist in the National Honor Society for the arts in elementary school. In high school a peer mentioned that a family member used ink to minimize their mistakes with their art. In search of a challenge, Mitchell transitioned from pencil to (ballpoint) pen. Studying tattoo artists for their attention to detail and execution, Mitchell implemented drawing techniques from the old masters and tattooists to create his approach.
Mitchell now employs ballpoint pen to create realism, juxtaposed with Acrylic to compliment the detail in his subjects. The figures depict emotions of longing, solidarity and reflection. Mitchell attempts to make whole an idea that is fractured in it’s current one-dimensional form, referencing fashion photography, along with religious elements to achieve, expand, include and empower the representation of women of color.
Presently he works as a Freelance Artist based out of Baltimore, who specializes in figurative drawing and painting.
